The Long Island Community Library remains closed due to the COVID19 pandemic. The staff is following the guidelines of the Maine CDC, the Governor’s executive orders, and the Town of Long Island’s guidelines. We all miss visiting with our winter patrons and will very much miss seeing our many summer Library visitors. Our year round volunteers, as well as many of our summer volunteers, are “at risk” individuals due to age or medical conditions. The Library Board wants to make sure that we keep our staff as well as our patrons as safe as possible. The Board will be working on an eventual plan for reopening in coordination with the School and will keep community members informed as they are developed.
While the Library building is closed there are still some services available to the Community. The internet service at the Library is the strongest on the Island and is available from the outside parking area. There are also chairs set up out front as well as on the back deck of the building. The CloudLibrary app is available free and offers thousands of books and audio books for download. You simply will need to enter your Long Island Library patron number. If you are unsure of the number, you may contact Annie Donovan, who has the list of all patrons. Although there are often “holds” on the most popular books, we have noticed that with more folks home and reading the “holds” seem to move fairly quickly. There are printed instructions for how to download the app on the outside Library bulletin board and also links below with instruction for using our CloudLibrary with various devices. The Library continues to get the daily Portland newspaper and the Sunday New York Times. They are available in the newspaper box on a first come, first served basis. Please do not return the paper to the box after you have read it.
The Library staff is hoping you are all well and reading some great books. We will be ordering new books as the book selling industry reopens. We always appreciate your suggestions. We are hopeful that at some point we may be able to offer curbside pick up for books. In the meanwhile we hope you enjoy a wonderful summer full of good times and good books.news
